Cash strapped teens are still trying to invent ways to cover Prom costs. Last year Prom goers made the most out of a faltering economy. What with parents more worried about paying the mortgage, than the electric bill, Prom isn't even on their radar. High school seniors left up to their own devices were borrowing Prom dresses, having friends provide make up and hair styling, and handing out coupons for Tuxedo's (For the guys, some tuxedo-rental shops offer the chance to be a prom representative who passes out coupons at school. For every coupon used to rent a tux, the representative receives his own discount.)
A 2008 survey by the Hearst Teen Network determined that girls spent an average of $236 on their prom dresses and $135 on accessories. Add to that $111 for beauty products and hair care and you've got one expensive night. With 2010 Prom just around the corner, look for opportunities like the Chicagoland Prom-A-Rama, where you can purchase new and previously worn Prom dresses at 60% off retail.
